Breezy Pine Acres is a Mayer-based community and offers many features home buyers and builders can appreciate. #Breezy Pine Acres is a high elevation, alpine, Mayer-based community. Residents love Breezy Pine Acres for the acreage of forest land backing to National Forest. The area is remote and some of the oldest settled area of the state. Access to water in both Turkey Creek and Hassayampa Creek as well as the famed Big Bug Creek and Aqua Fria river basin has provided a respite in the desert since the early 1800's. The town of Mayer was itself a mining community founded by Joe Mayer (Joseph Hoffmayer), its Treadwell Mine smoke stack still a visible landmark for miles around; calling to all gold-seekers from the east that they had finally arrived! The smelter had little use other than separating metals but is still used today by Mayer high school students in an annual ritual to send plumes of smoke into the sky on graduation day. The history of Mayer and the outlying areas of Bumble Bee, Cleator, and Crown King are all shrouded in a bit of mystery. But to me and my grandfather, Mayer was a starting point for our treks into the Bradshaws to look for gold during the 70's. Back in the day, the Roadrunner Prospecting Club was king in the back country, and many of the old-timers had been around for 50+ years...still telling their stories. Although no official mining has commenced in the last century, plenty of prospectors still scour the hills in search of riches.
One of the stories is the "useless" smokestack was intended for the gold rush boom, but wound up mostly being a landmark to travelers that civilization was near. Turret Peak, the site of one of Arizona's bloodiest conflicts (Bloody Basin) in the 1870's was a recent incident when Mayer founder originally purchased the Big Bug Station in 1882. The Indian uprisings were certainly being put to rest by General Crook, but unrest and animosity were still palpable realities.
Despite its colorful history the town of Mayer remains a solid way-station of sorts between Prescott and Phoenix with several restaurants and shops. Over the years, ranchers have purchased land up and down the Big Bug.
