The town of Mayer is currently a quaint community of old-timers, prospectors, and ranchers mixed with a few country folk who simply love the Arizona Southwest. Situated on the Big Bug Creek, Mayer sits between the town of Spring Valley and Dewey, AZ on Highway 69. Although the main strip sits in the Big Bug valley, the town quickly rises above the terrain into the foothills of the Bradshaws
Mayer is a community south of Prescott and Prescott Valley and offers many features home buyers and builders can appreciate. The area is remote and some of the oldest settled area of the state. Access to water in both Turkey Creek and Hassayampa Creek as well as the famed Big Bug Creek and Aqua Fria river basin has provided a respite in the desert since the early 1800's. The town of Mayer was itself a mining community founded by Joe Mayer (Joseph Hoffmayer), its Treadwell Mine smoke stack still a visible landmark for miles around; calling to all gold-seekers from the east that they had finally arrived! The smelter had little use other than separating metals but is still used today by Mayer high school students in an annual ritual to send plumes of smoke into the sky on graduation day. The history of Mayer and the outlying areas of Bumble Bee, Cleator, and Crown King are all shrouded in a bit of mystery. But to me and my grandfather, Mayer was a starting point for our treks into the Bradshaws to look for gold during the 70's. Back in the day, the Roadrunner Prospecting Club was king in the back country, and many of the old-timers had been around for 50+ years...still telling their stories. Although no official mining has commenced in the last century, plenty of prospectors still scour the hills in search of riches.
One of the stories is the "useless" smokestack was intended for the gold rush boom, but wound up mostly being a landmark to travelers that civilization was near. Turret Peak, the site of one of Arizona's bloodiest conflicts (Bloody Basin) in the 1870's was a recent incident when Mayer founder originally purchased the Big Bug Station in 1882. The Indian uprisings were certainly being put to rest by General Crook, but unrest and animosity were still palpable realities.
Despite its colorful history the town of Mayer remains a solid way-station of sorts between Prescott and Phoenix with several restaurants and shops. Over the years, ranchers have purchased land up and down the Big Bug.

Mayer is a great option for home buyers and builders looking to escape the larger cities of Prescott and Prescott Valley. If you're looking for something closer to the pines of the upper Bradshaw Mountains, then Mayer might be for you. Traveling into the hills from Prescott or even Prescott Valley is a long and arduous journey along non-maintained dirt roads. Mayer has easier access to the west via a few dirt roads, but these roads are much wider and maintained...at least until you hit the mountains themselves. Mayer is mostly known by travels by its central gas station and restaurant that occupy the frontage road. Opposite the highway is a little trailer park where part-time miners often hang their hats during the summer while looking for gold in the hills. Other sites claim authority on Mayer, however the information is outdated by years. Our business is real estate in Prescott, and that is why you will not see advertising subsidies on our website.
